Cà Brusà

Monforte d’Alba, Langhe–Piedmont, Italy

Organic Farming

In the rolling hills of the Langhe, in Monforte d’Alba, Cà Brusà is a small family estate shaped by generations of work among the vineyards. Its 10 hectares form a beautiful green amphitheater around the winery, with much of the land dedicated to Nebbiolo and positioned on slopes particularly suited to the production of structured, age-worthy wines.

With family roots in Monforte d’Alba dating back to 1890, Cà Brusà combines traditional Piedmontese winemaking with organic farming and a deep respect for the character of its vineyards.

The Story of Cà Brusà

The Marengo family’s story in the Langhe began in 1890, when Domenico Marengo moved to Monforte d’Alba. Over the generations, the family continued cultivating vines and making wine, gradually developing the estate that today carries the name Cà Brusà.

The winery remains very much a family operation. Luca and Dario follow in their father’s footsteps, caring for the vineyards and working in the cellar, while their mother manages the family B&B. This close connection between wine, food, family, and hospitality reflects the traditional culture of the Langhe, where winemaking is not simply a profession but a way of life.

The name of the estate carries its own piece of family history:

Cà = House | Brusà = Burned

Cà Brusà translates to “the burned house,” a name connected to the original family home, which was destroyed by fire in 1850. In Piedmont, where many families historically shared the same surnames, nicknames often became important ways of distinguishing one branch of a family from another. Cà Brusà became part of the family’s identity and has remained with the estate ever since.

Vineyards & Philosophy

Cà Brusà cultivates approximately 10 hectares of vineyards, arranged like a natural amphitheater in front of the winery. Nebbiolo plays a central role, benefiting from exposures particularly well suited to this demanding grape and to the production of Barolo.

Monforte d’Alba is known for soils historically described as Helvetian, characterized here by compressed sandstone and chalk. These conditions contribute to wines with firm tannins, structure, depth, and excellent aging potential—qualities strongly associated with the Barolo wines of Monforte.

Vineyards & Philosophy

The vineyards are farmed organically, with an approach centered on respecting the vines and allowing the character of the land to remain at the forefront.

In the cellar, Cà Brusà adapts its winemaking to each wine. Its youthful Langhe Nebbiolo “Briccolino” receives only a short maceration, creating a bright, fresh and approachable expression of Nebbiolo. The estate’s Barolo, by contrast, undergoes longer maceration and extended maturation in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging.

At the top of the range, the Barolo Riserva demonstrates the family’s commitment to patience, with fruit from older vines and prolonged maturation before release.

Across the portfolio, the philosophy remains consistent: organic farming, traditional craftsmanship, limited production, and wines that express the distinctive character of Monforte d’Alba and the Langhe.
