Every Wine Begins with a Place

Why can the same grape taste completely different when grown in Burgundy, Piedmont, Sicily, or the Rhône Valley? The answer begins with terroir — the combination of natural conditions and human influences that gives a wine its sense of place.

Then I would create four visual elements/cards, rather than a long educational paragraph:

SOIL

Limestone, clay, sand, volcanic rock, schist, and gravel influence drainage, water availability, root development, and ultimately how a vine grows.

CLIMATE

Sunlight, rainfall, temperature, wind, and seasonal changes determine how slowly or quickly grapes ripen and influence their balance of acidity, sugar, and flavor.

GEOGRAPHY

Altitude, slope, vineyard orientation, and proximity to mountains, rivers, lakes, or the sea can create dramatically different growing conditions—even between nearby vineyards.

HUMAN TOUCH

Terroir is expressed through generations of knowledge. Farming choices, grape varieties, harvest decisions, fermentation, and aging all influence how a place ultimately reveals itself in the glass.

What Is Terroir?

Terroir is a French term used to describe the unique combination of soil, climate, geography, and human tradition that shapes the identity of a wine.

It explains why Nebbiolo grown in the hills of Piedmont expresses itself differently from Grenache grown among the rounded stones of the Rhône Valley—or why a Chardonnay from Burgundy can be completely different from one grown near Lake Garda.

Terroir is what connects a wine to a specific place. It is the reason we look beyond grape varieties and seek producers whose wines tell the story of where they come from.

The character of a wine is shaped long before the grapes reach the cellar. A vineyard’s environment influences how the vines develop, how the fruit ripens, and the balance of acidity, aroma, structure, and flavor found in the finished wine. Even vineyards separated by only a few miles can produce remarkably different expressions of the same grape variety.

This connection between wine and place is at the heart of how we select our producers. We seek vineyards where the landscape can be tasted in the glass and winemakers who respect the natural identity of their land. From rare indigenous grape varieties to centuries-old vineyards and distinctive soils, our portfolio celebrates wines that could not come from anywhere else.
